SUPPORT FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

Birmingham Hippodrome is committed to forging relationships with secondary schools and colleges in the West Midlands and surrounding areas and developing the next generation of artists and audiences.

Because of this, we positively encourage schools/colleges and young people to develop an appreciation and understanding of theatre. This can be through a wide range of workshops and projects, led by our visiting companies or skilled freelance practioners.

These projects draw on our diverse and eclectic theatre programme offering West End musicals, International dance, classical ballet and world class opera and include in-school workshops, backstage tours and theatre visits. By enhancing students enjoyment of all performances and appreciation for the performer, we hope to develop a greater awareness of theatre and their role as an audience member.

As a theatre, we consider ourselves to be a total and complete resource for schools, offering workshops over a comprehensive subject area including such curriculum areas as Dance, Drama, English, Travel and Tourism and Business Studies at all levels including: GCSE, ‘A/S’ & ‘A’ level and BTEC diploma courses.

"The workshop encouraged pupil participation, pupils enjoyed the experience. They leant about different styles of dance and performance. They also came out of their comfort zone a little" Teacher Archbishop Isley

WORKSHOPS

MATTHEW BOURNE’S SWAN LAKE IS BACK

Thrilling, audacious and totally original, this witty and surprising production has been designed to speak to a modern audience, to excite them and to move them.

Perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble, Matthew Bourne blends dance, style, humour, spectacle, character comedy and mime to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times.

Re:Bourne the charitable education arm of New Adventures offers groups the opportunity to delve into the production’s themes, characters and iconic choreography.

Comments on backstage tour from students at Queen Alexandra College (a national college for students with visual impairment and other disabilities):

"I really enjoyed the trip this morning. The best parts for me were going onto the stage, going in the dressing room and just looking around the Hippodrome. Thank you for showing us around." - Gurpreet

"Thank you for welcoming us to the Hippodrome and for showing us how the sound and lights work backstage. Thank you also for showing us some of the props and dressing rooms. I couldn’t imagine how actors cope with everyone looking at them, so many faces. I might decide to do that one day." - Billal

“Today we went to the Birmingham Hippodrome for an educational trip . I did enjoy the experience because it was interesting to learn different things on and off stage.”  - Becky
